The Surf

The name "Hickory" came to be through the abbreviated interpretation of the traditional Māori name "Waikerikikari" – meaning 'The Bay of Angry Waters'.

A very apt description, as there's surf here most days.

Situated on the eastern tip of Banks Peninsula, Canterbury, NZ, "Hickory" as it's known by surfers the world over, boasts powerful, punchy beach-break waves with an uncanny consistency. Clean conditions are common place in the prevailing northeast sea-breeze.

  • Can anyone surf at Hickory Bay?

    Yes, of course. We just ask that you respect we're a working farm and look after the place as we try to do. Pick up after yourself and stick to the marked paths to get to the break.

    We only hire our boards out to guests who are staying at our accommodation.

  • Can we use the sauna?

    The sauna is only bookable by guests at our accommodation. Come and stay for a night!
